What Is Melasma?

Melasma is a condition characterized by brown patches on the facial skin. While melasma is not dangerous to your health, it is an annoying cosmetic issue that can impact your confidence. Typically, melasma can appear on the upper lip, chin, nose, forehead, cheeks, or other areas frequently exposed to the sun. While sun exposure is one risk factor for melasma, it is also associated with female hormones. As such, melasma often affects pregnant women or those on hormonal birth control or hormone replacement therapy.

Reducing sun exposure or discontinuing hormonal medications may help to reduce melasma. Chemical peels and topical creams containing tretinoin, azelaic acid, or steroids can also be effective. Lasers are another safe, effective melasma treatment we use at Marmur Medical.

Fraxel FTX and other fractionated lasers must be used thoughtfully in melasma, and our team will carefully assess your skin and medical history to design a regimen that balances improvement in pigment with protection against flares and post inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

How Do Laser Treatments Work for Melasma?

In cases where more traditional methods of melasma treatment, including chemical peels or topical treatments, have failed to produce the desired results, laser therapy is a safe alternative option. At Marmur Medical, we offer laser treatments, such as Fraxel DUAL, to help address melasma.

Lasers work by removing damaged skin and stimulating collagen and new skin growth. The heat energy breaks down the excess melanin into small pieces that are then eliminated by the body’s waste system.

Following your laser melasma treatment, your skin will look red or raw. It’s important to keep your skin moisturized during recovery. In 3 to 5 days, your skin will look brighter with a more even tone. Typically, most patients experience the best results after 3 to 4 sessions. Full results are typically visible in 3 to 6 months. Our experts may recommend follow-up treatments to ensure the longevity of your results.

What Can I Expect After My Laser Treatment in New York City?

With so many factors in play, each patient will experience different results after a laser treatment. Your outcome depends on the concerns you are addressing, the type of laser you have chosen, your body’s ability to heal, and more.

However, we recommend that all patients follow the post-procedure care instructions below to give themselves the best chance of healing well.

  1. Moisturize frequently with MMSkincare Revive serum every 4 hours and Repose serum at night. You may also use Aquaphor several times a day for maximum hydration and healing for any crusts or scabs. 
  2. Avoid harsh soaps, brushes, exfoliants, or retinoids for at least one week.
  3. Cleanse the skin with gentle products like Isdin Micellar water or Previse Purify once or twice daily.
  4. Start using the MMSkincare Revive post-procedure rejuvenation masks as soon as your first day for the first week. 
  5. Occasionally, tiny acne-looking bumps may occur on the lower face and are best treated with benzoyl peroxide or antibiotic cream. Please let us know if you need a prescription or are prone to breakouts.

Laser Recovery

Our MMSkincare Post-Laser Revive Bundle has been created for your ongoing post-treatment skincare.

  1. In the morning, wash gently with our Luscious moisturizing cleanser, and pat your skin dry.
  2. Then, apply Revive Serum using 2 to 3 pumps on your fingertips to warm the serum. Apply to the skin in gentle, round strokes over the upper and lower eyelids, forehead, temples, cheeks, upper lip, chin, neck, and upper chest.

NYC Fraxel, Clear + Brilliant Touch, & HALO Laser FAQ

Clear + Brilliant Touch

Patients often notice a difference in just two treatments. However, the best results are often seen after a series of 4-6 treatments. Our team will help you develop a plan that works best for you.

You should begin to notice results within one week of your first treatment. Your skin will start to feel softer, look brighter, and show a more even tone.

This will depend on your particular issues and how well you care for your skin afterward. Many patients enjoy enduring results with the right skin care routine. 

You may experience some minor side effects like slight swelling or redness in the treatment area. This is expected and indicates that the treatment is working. Most patients do not report any pain.

Avoid sun exposure, tanning, or using any self-tanning products for at least 7-14 days before and after treatment. Also, stop using retinol products for a week prior to and following your Clear + Brilliant treatment.

As sweating can irritate skin and cause itching, strenuous exercises or activities should be avoided for at least the first 24-48 hours following treatment for most patients.

Clear + Brilliant treatments require minimal downtime. Patients may experience some redness in the treated areas for a few hours. However, you can expect dryness as the skin sheds in tiny columns over the following 1-2 weeks. This process is barely visible but can feel like sand on the skin. MMSkincare Essentials like Revive, Repose, and Rescue are formulated to optimize this collagen building process. We highly recommend using the Revive hydrogel masks daily for 4 days for 20 minutes for an incredibly good healing experience. Sasha Suncare Mineral face lotion and body SPF 50 are the perfect texture and strength to protect your skin year round.

Fraxel DUAL

Results should show in 1-2 sessions for pigment issues, while wrinkles or acne scarring should show in 3-5 sessions. For both wrinkles and acne, we recommend spacing out sessions four weeks apart. For sun damage, it’s often recommended to schedule sessions 6-8 weeks apart. We’ll help you determine the right approach when you meet with us in a consultation.

The extent of your results depends on your particular issues and how well you care for your skin afterward. Many patients enjoy enduring results with the right skin care routine.

Expect pinkness, swelling (like a hive), bronzing, and cayenne pepper–colored pinpoint specks for up to a week on the face, two weeks on the neck and chest, and two to six weeks on arms and legs. Usually, there is no pain afterward.

Approximately 60 minutes before treatment, your skin will be cleansed and treated with a topical anesthetic. Typically, Fraxel DUAL treatments take 20-30 minutes to treat the face. However, the treatment time will depend upon other areas to be treated.

Pre-treatment products should include Revive serum every morning, Repose serum every evening, and for breakout prone areas, Balance serum twice daily. Avoid sun exposure, tanning, or using any self-tanning products for at least 4 weeks before treatment. You should also stop using retinol or glycolic acid products for 2 weeks before treatment. One week before treatment, avoid alcohol, aspirin, and other blood-thinning medications or supplements. After your Fraxel Dual treatment, you can expect dryness as the skin sheds in tiny columns over the following 1-2 weeks. This process is barely visible but can feel like sand on the skin. MMSkincare Essentials like Revive, Repose, and Rescue are formulated to optimize this collagen building process. We highly recommend using the Revive Serum generously to all areas of red or pink skin several times a day to maximize your skin healing and redness reduction; apply the Repose Serum to all areas every evening covered by the essential Rescue cream for extra soothing moisturization; use the Revive hydrogel masks daily for 4 days for 20 minutes for an incredibly good healing experience. Last, Sasha Suncare Mineral face lotion and body SPF are perfect to add to your skincare kit to protect your skin year round. If you experience pink acneiform bumps after fractional laser treatments, this is considered a sterile folliculitis where tiny hair follicles are inflamed. Add to your routine the MMBalance serum twice daily to control these areas of breakouts. 

Many patients who have previously enjoyed Fraxel Dual, IPL, or HALO treatments choose Fraxel FTX as their next step because it can be calibrated to address more specific areas of sun damage and scarring while still respecting your skin’s tolerance. At your consultation, we will review your laser history and design a plan that safely builds on prior treatments.

Fraxel FTX is a non‑surgical, surface‑level laser treatment and does not interfere with routine cancer screenings or mammograms; however, if you are under the care of a dermatologist or oncologist for active skin conditions, we will coordinate your care and ensure that the timing of laser resurfacing fits comfortably with your broader health plan.

Fraxel FTX often complements other non‑surgical treatments, such as injectables, microneedling, and advanced skincare, and we may recommend spacing these procedures several days or weeks apart to minimize overlap in healing and maximize your overall rejuvenation.

In the weeks leading up to your Fraxel FTX session, we usually advise avoiding tanning, aggressive peels, and new irritants, while focusing on gentle cleansing, hydration, and sun protection so your skin is calm and ready for laser. You’ll receive a personalized pre‑treatment checklist during your consultation.

HALO

Halo laser treatments often show dramatic results with just 1-2 treatments. However, your results and treatment schedule will depend on the type and extent of your concerns, as well as your body’s natural healing abilities.

This depends on your particular issues and how well you care for your skin afterward. Many patients enjoy enduring results with the right skin care routine. 

Minor swelling and redness may occur, but this is normal and should alleviate as your body heals naturally. Most patients report minimal discomfort throughout the entire process.

For most patients, sweating can irritate skin and cause itching, strenuous exercise or activities should be avoided for the first 2-48 hours following treatment.

Avoid wearing makeup for at least 24-48 hours following treatment. Remove the make up with a gentle cleanser such as MMSkincare Luscious Lotion cleanser with clementine antioxidants and immediately replenish your skin barrier with MMRevive Serum, containing healing aloe, moisturizing hyaluronic acid, peptides and post-procedure ingredients in the Dynamic Essence ™ .

As with all lasers and IPL/BBL light treatments, avoid sun exposure, tanning, or using any self-tanning products for at least 2 weeks before treatment. You should also stop using retinol products for a week prior to treatment unless specifically prescribed by us when, for example, we feel it will improve your results or prevent post laser hyperpigmentation. Pre-treatment products should include Revive serum every morning, Repose serum every evening, and for breakout prone areas, Balance serum twice daily.

Because Fraxel FTX, Clear + Brilliant Touch, and HALO focus on skin quality rather than volume, modest weight changes typically do not undo your results. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle and using sun protection will help preserve your smoother, more even skin over time.
