MOXI vs Fraxel FTX for Laser Skin Treatment

If you are looking for smoother, clearer, more even skin without surgery, laser treatments are one of the most effective tools in modern dermatology. Two popular options are MOXI and Fraxel FTX. Both are fractional, non-ablative lasers, which means they treat tiny portions of the skin while leaving the surrounding tissue intact, but they are designed for different goals and different levels of downtime. Here is how MOXI and Fraxel FTX compare, who each treatment suits best, and how the team at Marmur Medical in New York City helps patients choose, led by dermatologist and dermatologic surgeon Dr. Ellen Marmur.

What Is MOXI Laser?

MOXI is a gentle fractional laser that uses controlled heat to encourage collagen production. It is often described as a prejuvenation treatment because it addresses early signs of aging before they become pronounced. MOXI can improve fine lines, sun damage, uneven pigmentation, acne scarring, dullness, and uneven tone and texture, and it is safe for all skin types and tones, including darker and tanned skin.

MOXI is not limited to the face. Many patients treat the neck, chest, hands, and forearms to create a more uniform look between the face and body, and some candidates treat the back, shoulders, or legs. A session typically takes 15 to 30 minutes, and a topical anesthetic is not generally required.

What Is Fraxel FTX?

Fraxel FTX is a fractional laser designed to deliver more targeted correction. Marmur Medical offers Fraxel treatments with the newest Fraxel FTX platform, an upgraded, non-ablative, dual-wavelength system designed to enhance comfort, consistency, and safety. The practice is proud to be among the first in New York City to offer it, which allows the team to tailor treatment intensity for concerns ranging from early sun damage and melasma to deeper acne scars and fine lines around the eyes.

Fraxel FTX can improve skin tone and texture, reduce wrinkles and fine lines around the eyes, minimize the appearance of acne and surgical scars, and erase unwanted brown spots. It is especially appealing for patients with stubborn sunspots, acne scars, or fine lines that have not responded to topical skincare alone, or for those who want to refresh their complexion before an upcoming event.

How Do MOXI and Fraxel FTX Compare?

The simplest way to think about the difference is intensity and purpose. MOXI is the gentler, introductory option, well suited to maintaining skin health, refining texture, and brightening the complexion with minimal downtime. Fraxel FTX is built for patients who want to target more noticeable concerns, such as brown spots, acne scarring, and lines around the eyes, and who are comfortable with a few more days of visible recovery.

Both treatments are fractional and non-ablative, but they differ in several practical ways. MOXI sessions are brief, and most patients can resume normal activities right away, with warmth and slight sunburn-like redness that resolves in about 3 to 4 days. Fraxel FTX typically brings a few days of redness, swelling, and bronzed or sandpapery skin, followed by gradual brightening and smoothing over the next several weeks as new collagen develops. MOXI results build subtly across a series of sessions, while Fraxel FTX may show results in fewer sessions for certain concerns.

Which Laser Is Better for Sun Damage, Pigment, and Melasma?

Both lasers address sun damage and uneven pigmentation, so the better choice depends on severity and your skin. For early sun damage, mild uneven tone, and overall dullness, MOXI is often an excellent fit. For more stubborn sunspots and brown spots, Fraxel FTX offers the added precision many patients are looking for.

Melasma deserves extra care. These brown patches are often linked to sun exposure and female hormones, and fractional lasers must be used thoughtfully to avoid flares and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Marmur Medical carefully assesses your skin and medical history before recommending a plan. If your concern is primarily brown spots and diffuse redness, IPL or BBL may also be part of the conversation.

Which Laser Is Better for Acne Scars and Fine Lines?

For mild texture changes, early fine lines, and shallow acne scarring, MOXI can deliver gradual improvement with little interruption to your routine. For deeper acne scars and fine lines around the eyes, Fraxel FTX is generally the stronger choice. Patients who want even more dramatic resurfacing may also be candidates for laser peels and deep laser resurfacing.

How Many Sessions Will You Need?

Most MOXI patients see noticeable results after a series of sessions scheduled 4 to 6 weeks apart, with subtle improvements right away and fresher skin within about a week. Because collagen takes time to build, benefits can continue to develop for a few weeks.

For Fraxel FTX, pigment concerns may improve in 1 to 2 sessions, while wrinkles or acne scarring typically need 3 to 5 sessions spaced about four weeks apart. For sun damage, sessions are often scheduled 6 to 8 weeks apart. Melasma patients typically see the best results after 3 to 4 sessions, with full results visible in 3 to 6 months. Your provider will build a schedule around your skin and goals.

Can You Combine MOXI and Fraxel FTX with Other Treatments?

Yes, and many patients benefit from a combined approach. MOXI works well alongside BBL, since MOXI smooths and brightens while BBL lifts discoloration for a clearer, more even complexion. Fraxel FTX can also be staged with HALO or Clear + Brilliant Touch to address multiple layers of sun damage and texture irregularities without surgery. Your provider will decide whether to stage treatments or pair them based on your skin type, sun exposure, and goals.

Who Is a Good Candidate for MOXI or Fraxel FTX?

Ideal candidates for either laser are healthy, have realistic expectations, and understand the risks and benefits of laser treatment. MOXI may not be appropriate if you have a rare photosensitive skin disease, take high-dose Accutane or photosensitizing medications, have open wounds including recurrent herpes virus, or are pregnant or immunosuppressed. During your consultation, the team considers your skin type, lifestyle, and tolerance for downtime to decide between MOXI, Fraxel FTX, and other options, or a combination.

Preparation is similar for both. You will generally avoid sun exposure for two weeks, skip waxing, pause retinol and exfoliating acids, and discuss any history of cold sores so an antiviral can be prescribed. Afterward, moisturize frequently, avoid harsh products, avoid strenuous exercise for 48 to 72 hours after MOXI, and protect your skin from the sun with SPF 30 or higher. Marmur Medical’s MMSkincare post-laser regimen is designed to support healing between sessions.
