New Teledermatology!

Dear Patients and Friends,

Marmur Medical hopes you are staying safe and would like to keep everyone safe by offering Teledermatology services to patients.

Our new Teledermatology services will allow patients to continue their care with the physicians they know and trust while staying safe in the comfort of their own home.

We are seeing patients both virtually and have modified hours for in-office visits. Please call the office directly (212-996-6900) to arrange these consults with your health care provider or you can send your virtual appointment request to telederm@marmurmedical.com

We urge patients who are experiencing respiratory symptoms (fever, cough, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, body aches, extreme fatigue), traveled outside of the United States within the last 30 days, or have had direct contact with anyone who is sick, please be tested for COVID-19 and please do not come into the office.

See below for more information regarding our Teledermatology services.

Is Teledermatology right for me?

Teledermatology is defined as the utilization of the internet to care for our patients’ health concerns, which has already proved to be extremely useful during this unprecedented time in medicine and history. Modern technology has facilitated this method of healthcare and is implemented through the use of HIPAA-compliant tools. Teledermatogy at Marmur Medical is intended for the use of refilling prescriptions, checking a new spot or a rash, and managing rosacea or acne. Teledermatology will not serve as a replacement for a total body check, surgical procedure, medical procedure, or cosmetic procedure.

Are medical Teledermatology visits covered by my insurance?

Most major insurance companies have increased their telemedicine coverage. All virtual visits will be submitted to the patient’s insurance carrier. If your insurance carrier does not cover the visit, patients will be responsible for an $115.00 non-refundable fee. For that reason we require a valid credit card to be kept on file for all Teledermatology appointments.

Will there be a co-payment?

Yes, co-pays, co-insurance and deductibles do apply to telemedicine visit depending on your carrier. Please note that follow-ups within the first week are at a reduced rate of $50.00 but are not covered by insurance.

What do I need to do in order to schedule a Teledermatology visit?

Please call our office at (212)996-6900 to schedule a Teledermatology visit or email Telederm@marmurmedical.com. We are asking that you write your doctor’s name and concern in the subject line. Ex: “Berliner – Rash on arm.” Please include as many details as possible and send clear, well-lit photos so that we can upload them to your chart.

How long are Teledermatology visits?

The appointments are 20 minutes long.

Can I have a Teledermatology visit for cosmetic concerns?

If you would like to have a cosmetic consultation with any of our doctors, the fee is $250 and will be applied to your treatment – just as if the consultation was done in office! However, we are obviously extending the 2-week treatment window which is normally the duration when patients are eligible to apply their $250 fee given the COVID-19 situation.

Skin Cancer

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the world — in the U.S. alone, more than 3 million cases of skin cancer will be diagnosed this year, and one out of every five Americans will develop some type of skin cancer over the course of their lifetime. The good news is that most skin cancers are completely curable, but early detection and treatment are key. For this reason, you need to do a monthly self-check, looking for changes to your skin such as irregular moles, especially those that evolve or bleed, and at least once a year, schedule a full body check with your dermatologist.

Diagnosis and Treatment

To diagnose skin cancer, we carefully examine the patient’s skin, paying particular attention to growths, moles, and dry patches. If we find something that looks like skin cancer, we will remove part or all of it and send it to a lab for testing.

When we devise a treatment plan for skin cancer, we take into consideration the type of cancer, where it is located, whether it is aggressive, its stage, and the patient’s overall health. We then develop a plan that may include one or more of the following: surgery, immunotherapy, cryosurgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and/or photodynamic therapy. These treatments may be followed by procedures to improve the appearance of the affected area.

“The good news is that most skin cancers are completely curable, but early detection and treatment are key.”

Cosmetic Dermatology

Cosmetic dermatology is a rapidly evolving field, and the techniques are improving at an astonishing pace. The right procedure can actively improve how you look and feel, with positive results that can boost your confidence and self-esteem.

Patients need expert guidance when facing the ever-growing list of available procedures.  We work closely with each patient to develop a plan that best delivers the desired results, focusing on flexible, non-invasive treatments. We’re not looking to “fix” our patients; instead, our goal is to help each patient discover the best ways to enhance his or her individual look and unique beauty.

Acne correction

There are a variety of treatments for acne, depending on the severity of the outbreak, the patient’s age, and the skin type. The Marmur Medical team develops a custom program for each patient, using one or more of the following: topical treatments, laser therapy, oral antibiotics, and injections. Our experts may also coach you on your lifestyle and diet which Dr. Marmur believes play a direct role in your acne breakouts.

Acne scar removal

Acne can leave behind scarring that lasts for years. With treatments such as subcision, lasers, fractional resurfacing with Fraxel (a life-changing improvement for so many of our patients with acne scars), BLU light (which kills the acne bacteria painlessly and also tones down the inflammation), and soft tissue fillers, Marmur Medical can greatly improve the appearance of your skin.

Male Patient after one treatment of Fraxel for acne scars.

Actinic keratosis treatment

AKs can be treated in a number of ways, including cryosurgery, different smart creams that target pre-cancers, photodynamic therapy, and Dr. Marmur’s innovative combination of personalized treatments with Fraxel laser resurfacing and BLU light photodynamic therapy. During any procedures, if a growth behaves or looks like skin cancer, it will be biopsied — Dr. Marmur, a skin cancer surgeon and skin cancer survivor herself, believes in a proactive approach to skin cancers. Ongoing non-invasive treatments can greatly reduce the chance of developing skin cancers. Her goal is to decrease the chance that you will need surgery.

Allergy testing

It can be tricky to determine what exactly is causing an allergic reaction (such as contact dermatitis) in your skin. Through a controlled application of various test substances to the skin, your dermatologist can see what is triggering your dermatitis and advise you on how best to avoid the allergens. Dr. Marmur may recommend a patch test, which utilizes stickers, not needles, to detect silent triggers of inflamed, rashy, sensitive skin. Patients tell her she has transformed their quality of life just from identifying and eliminating their exposure to common allergens such as nickel or balsam of Peru.

Brown spot removal

Brown spots, or age spots, are the result of aging and sun exposure and are common on the face, hands, and chest. They can cause people to look and feel older, even more so than wrinkles. It is critical that you have a skin cancer expert look at your brown spots first to be sure they are not a form of melanoma or other skin cancer. Most often, they are just age spots or seborrheic keratosis (SKs). Once they are diagnosed to be benign, we have options to remove them. Cryosurgery can freeze the SK so they can dehydrate and fall off on their own. Curettage requires an excision. Electrodesiccation burns the lesions off.  And depending on the size, laser treatments may be available.

ESKATA™ is the first and only FDA-approved topical treatment for raised seborrheic keratosis (SKs). At least two treatments are recommended for optimal results but may vary depending on the raised SKs. Each application is applied 4 times, approximately 1 minute apart.

Cellulite treatment

Regardless of your weight, fitness level, or size, if you’re a woman over the age of 20, chances are you have cellulite. Cellulite comes about when fat cells in the deepest layer of the skin become over-inflated and irregularly shaped. They then protrude up through the connective tissue, causing that dimpling appearance in the skin. Through one or more therapies, Marmur Medical can greatly diminish the appearance of cellulite on any part of your body. Dr. Marmur has treated many women after childbirth to bring the appearance of their abdominal skin and fat back to their bikini days. She can collaborate with different physicians to personalize the best plan for you. Remember, even runway models have cellulite, so there is no shame involved. Now with Coolsculpting, Vanquish, Thermage, and Fraxel, we have many ways to help.

Chemical peels

Chemical peels, also known as chemical resurfacing, are used for the treatment of photoaging (from sun damage), wrinkles, scarring, acne, pre-cancerous lesions, and discoloration such as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or melasma. Chemical peels produce controlled injury to the skin that promotes the growth of new skin with an improved appearance. Dr. Marmur specializes in peels and has successfully treated her own melasma using a series of five chemical peels and Fraxel. Marmur Medical will help you to select the best post-peel skin care regimen to maintain your new, clear skin.

Superficial peels (e.g., glycolic acid) produce injury confined to the epidermis, or outer layer of the skin, and can help improve conditions such as acne and dyschromia. Deeper peels (e.g., phenol) produce injury within the dermis, or inner layer, and can reverse moderate to severe photoaging and wrinkles. In general, deeper peels offer the most dramatic results but require longer recovery periods and carry a higher risk of complications. Dr. Marmur does not use phenol peels due to their higher risk profile. Instead, she prefers to use medium-depth peels so you have the highest benefits and the lowest risk.

Cryosurgery is the process of destroying warts and skin tumors by freezing tissue with liquid nitrogen. During the process, the entire growth as well as a margin of healthy tissue are completely frozen. When the frozen cells thaw, they explode, and the quick-freeze, slow-thaw cycle will normally be repeated a few times.

Dermabrasion at MM, or resurfacing of the skin, involves the use of lasers to remove the outer layers of the skin to produce a smoother appearance. Laser dermabrasion has been used for the treatment of photoaging (from sun damage), wrinkles, scarring, acne, pre-cancerous lesions, and discoloration (or dyschromia).

Ear piercing

Having your ears (or your child’s ears) pierced at Marmur Medical means you don’t have to worry about infections, allergies, or botched procedures. We use sterile, non-allergenic piercing kits, including studs.

Ear piercing repair for torn earlobes

When the piercing in an earlobe is stretched or torn, a simple, cosmetic, surgical procedure can repair the damage, with minimal recovery time. Torn earlobes are usually partially torn, from heavy earrings or an accidental tear, meaning the earlobe is intact. A complete tear means the earlobe is not fully intact anymore. Dr. Marmur specializes in repairing both partial and fully torn earlobes. Imagine being able to wear your favorite earrings again!

Earlobe rejuvenation

Yes, earlobes age! Some patients complain their earrings don’t hang nicely anymore or that they have wrinkled skin on their lobes that was never there before. Indeed, loss of volume or fat in the earlobes can be a visible sign of aging. A quick injection of a filler such as Restylane, Perlane, Juvederm Ultra, Juvederm Ultra Plus, Belotero, Radiesse, or Sculptra can restore a youthful plumpness to the lobe. The filler typically lasts for about six to twelve months.

Excisional surgery

Excisional surgery is used to remove bumps, birthmarks, large oil glands, benign age spots such as seborrheic keratoses, and skin cancers such as melanoma, dysplastic nevi, basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, or rare tumors. A local anesthesia is administered using the smallest possible needle, and then the cancer and a “margin of safety” around the growth are excised. Most of the time, the area is immediately closed up with sutures. The specimen is sent to a pathology lab where it is evaluated to ensure that the entire growth has been successfully removed.

Eyelid rejuvenation

Radiofrequency treatment is a non-invasive, single-treatment procedure that can tighten the skin above the eyes, raise sagging upper eyelids, and tighten crinkly skin on the upper and lower lids. FDA studies showed a 5mm lift of the upper lids after Thermage treatments. In addition, Fraxel Restore is wonderful for reducing the fine, crepey skin around the eyes. Dr. Marmur specializes in injections under and around the eyes to rejuvenate the dark circles under the eyes and the overall loss of structure to the peri-orbital area. Make sure you avoid all blood thinners for one week before eyelid treatments due to the higher chance of bruising.

Freckle removal

As with brown spot removal, laser therapy is used to break up the pigment in the skin, leaving behind a clearer, smoother appearance. Freckles can be individually treated or, if you have hundreds and just want to tone them down but not lose them, Dr. Marmur can treat the area.

Hair loss treatment - PRP

Hair loss can be the result of many different causes, including genetics, hormonal changes, use of medications, other triggers such as injury to hair follicles through chemotherapy or traction alopecia, and trauma or stress. More than many other dermatologic conditions, hair loss reflects your entire well being, inside and out, and losing your hair can be terribly upsetting. Dr. Marmur may refer you to a hair specialist after possibly recommending a small skin biopsy of the scalp to see what the follicles look like. Often blood tests are very helpful to check for anemia, hormone imbalance, peri-menopause, or other systemic issues. And just as there are a variety of causes, so there are a variety of treatments, including topical medications, oral medications, light therapy, and surgery.

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) treatment helps patients who are experiencing hair loss. PRP is a patented technology and process where your blood is drawn (similar to that of a basic lab test) and the blood is spun rapidly in a centrifuge. During this process, platelets separate from other components of the blood. Once platelet-rich plasma is harvested, it is injected into the patient’s scalp for hair regrowth. Since the blood comes exclusively from the patient, there is virtually no risk of an allergic reaction or rejection of therapy. 3-4 treatments are typical for most patients.

Hyperhidrosis (sweat) treatment

Hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating, is typically a chronic condition that develops in adolescence or young adulthood. People with hyperhidrosis produce an amount of sweat exceeding that which is needed to regulate body temperature (the purpose of perspiration), and can suffer from dehydration and skin infections. Treatment options include powders, ointments, electrical stimulation, and Botox injections.

Dr. Marmur was one of the first key opinion leaders in NYC and the country to be selected to perform and train other doctors to do Instalift by Silhouette. Instalift is a non-invasive skin lifting procedure that can be done artistically to adjust jowls or wrinkles up and away from the center of the face. It works beautifully. The Instalift is made of a resorbable stitch similar to the self dissoloving suture we use in our reconstructive surgeries. This stitch is beaded with tiny arrow shaped coils of filler. When the Instalift thread is placed, the skin can be pushed back along the beads and held in place, giving a 5mm to 1 cm lift or adjustmant of skin. It lasts for 12-18 months and inspires vectors of natural collagen to grow giving a lasting benefit. Most patients need 1-3 sets or pairs of Instalifts and we personalize it for each patient.

Lip rejuvenation

Dr. Marmur was selected to be the doctor who injected the model for the international campaign for lip filler for Restylane Silk. She has been called the best injector of lips by other doctors who frequently observe her techniques. Dr. Marmur loves lip sculpting for a natural look or for a super glamorous look, totally based on what each patient wants, but she will refuse to do too much. Sun exposure, smoking, scars, and aging can all contribute to a less youthful appearance for our lips. Our lips can become thinner and less plump, and lip lines in the skin above and below the border of the lip can appear. But no one wants to walk around with “duck lips,” so Dr. Marmur insists on keeping you looking like yourself. She asks you to bring in a few photographs of yourself over the years so she can study your natural features and, using her artistic and medical skills, re-create your unique look, newly rejuvenated. Treatment might involve the injection of fillers such as hyaluronic acid into the lips to subtly enlarge, enhance, and restore their appearance; the hyaluronic acid also stimulates collagen production, which helps make the lips fuller. Belotero, Volbella, Restylane Silk, and Juvederm Ultra are all great choices.  Or Dr. Marmur may recommend less filler and instead add a little Botox, Dysport, or XEOMIN, or Fraxel laser for lip and perioral rejuvenation.

Microdermabrasion - Clear + Brilliant

Marmur Medical has upgraded to using fractional Clear + Brilliant instead of the older microdermabrasion, which uses tiny particles or a diamond-faceted metal wand with a vacuum suction to scrape or suck away dead or aging skin.  Clear + Brilliant is more predictable and better at stimulating new cell growth. Because of the superficial nature of this technique, patients with mild to moderate skin damage and wrinkles are the best candidates, and multiple treatments are usually required to achieve the subtle results. Clear + Brilliant is great for acne, too, and it enhances the success of your other treatments. Many patients like to come once a month for Clear + Brilliant to keep their skin baby soft and smooth. Clear + Brilliant is a must-do procedure a few days before a wedding or big event so that your skin glows. It is by far one of our most popular procedures.

Mohs surgery

Surgery - combined

Marmur Medical is proud to offer two, highly trained Mohs Surgeons–Dr. Ellen Marmur and Dr. Jackie Berliner. Mohs micrographic surgery is a precise surgical technique for removing several types of skin cancers—most commonly basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Mohs surgeons are dermatologists, surgeons, and pathologists with fellowship training, specializing in skin cancer detection, removal, and repair. During Mohs surgery, layers of cancer-containing skin are progressively removed and examined until only cancer-free tissue remains. Mohs surgery is the minimalist approach to skin cancer surgery. When performed by an experienced surgeon, Mohs surgery offers maximum removal of cancer with minimum damage to surrounding healthy tissue. Since the excised tissues are examined during the surgery, the surgeon does not need to over-estimate how far around or deep the roots of the skin cancer go, allowing the surgeon to remove all of the cancer cells while sparing as much normal tissue as possible. The cure rate of the Mohs technique is 99 percent for most skin cancers, considerably higher than that of other methods; it also provides the greatest chance of cure when other methods have failed.

Dr. Marmur has performed over 10,000 cases of Mohs surgery, including extremely complex cases involving the eye, lip, nose, and ears. She prefers to take smaller stages to preserve as much normal skin as possible so the risk of a scar is minimized, and she collaborates with multiple specialists in neurosurgery, facial plastic surgery, ophthalmology, ENT, and plastic surgery to ensure you get the very best result. In a recent national survey, Dr. Marmur’s average number of stages needed to clear the cancer was better than the national average. Both Dr. Marmur and Dr. Berliner are excellent at reconstructing complex defects with beautiful cosmetic results.

Mole and birthmark removal

Brown moles, skin-colored moles, red birthmarks, and acquired moles are often removed easily. We love minimizing these spots if they bother you. Congenital nevi — moles you were born with — might be small, medium, or large. In most adults, if these moles are smaller than 6 cm, they present no increased risk of melanoma compared with normal skin. Our doctors will evaluate your mole or birthmark to let you know the best cosmetic method to remove it, through a simplified procedure with low risk of scarring. Laser therapy can be extremely effective in removing moles and birthmarks, including “port wine stains.” The laser is applied to the precise area, and the vessels break up and disappear, resulting in clearer, smoother skin.

Nail surgery

Nail surgery is used for a number of conditions, including deformity, growths, benign or malignant tumors, cysts, ingrown toenails, pincer nails, curved nails, nail scarring, and infection. The procedure can involve removing part or all of a nail, or obtaining samples from the nail, nail bed, or surrounding soft tissue. Dr. Marmur and Dr. Berliner have extensive training and experience in nail surgery. If we feel you would benefit, we may refer you to an orthopedic surgeon or a podiatrist.

Neck treatment

Thanks to sun exposure, as well as the effects of aging, your neck might need some attention. Through a combination of treatments, Marmur Medical can improve the appearance of pigmentation, redness, horizontal lines, and sagging skin. In the past, many of the laser treatments could not be done on the neck due to its fragility and propensity to discoloration or scarring. Now, new devices allow for neck tightening — including the dreaded waddle and fat beneath the chin — and for repair of sun damage of the neck and upper chest. We will also provide you with the best neck skincare products to maintain this heretofore neglected area.

Non-surgical nose correction

A non-surgical rhinoplasty can fill depressions, smooth out sharp angles, camouflage bumps, balance asymmetry, or change the angle of the tip of the nose, all through the injection of a filler such as Radiesse or any of the Juvederm or Restylane products. It’s a quick, non-invasive procedure that usually involves no bruising or swelling.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT)

Dr. Marmur specializes in using Photodynamic therapy (PDT), which destroys targeted cells, is FDA-approved for the treatment of actinic keratoses and pre-cancers, and is also used for photorejuvenation, wrinkles, discoloration, visible veins, and acne. The procedure begins with the application of a topical drug called aminolevulinic acid (ALA), a photosensitizer, and the skin is then exposed to a light source called a BLU-U. Rapidly growing cells, oil glands, and other structures in the skin absorb the photosensitizer and are destroyed by a reaction caused by the light. Dr. Marmur is on the advisory board of DUSA Pharmaceuticals, the company that created this modality, because of her expertise in using ALA/PDT in preventing and treating skin cancer. Her original article on the kinetics of pre-cancer conversion into skin cancer is extensively quoted, she lectures extensively in this field, and she conducts genetic research on the concept of improving personalized medical treatment of pre-cancers.

Rosacea treatments

Rosacea causes redness in the skin and can also bring on flushing, swelling, acne-like breakouts, skin thickening, and swollen, irritated eyelids and eyes that may eventually lead to cataracts and even blindness. A wide variety of treatment options is available, depending on the type of rosacea and its severity, including topical medications, emollients, laser therapy, antibiotics (both oral and topical), and dermabrasion. Rosacea skin can be very frustrating. At Marmur Medical, we will help you get to the source of your inflammation and offer solutions. IPL or BBL (Broad Band Light) light treatments continue to be one of Dr. Marmur’s favorite cosmetic treatments of rosacea as an adjuvant to medical therapy, and we can also recommend the best products for your sensitive skin — including sunscreen, which can prevent flare-ups. Recent studies have proven the IPL or BBL are superior to the traditional VBeam laser for rosacea.

Scar revision

Scar revision refers to a group of surgical techniques used to reduce the appearance of scars, including keloid scars, acne scars, burn scars, hypertrophic scars, contractures, facial scars, and scars were caused by injury or previous operations. In the surgery, the scar may be excised, and the area might be reconstructed to minimize the disfigurement. Dr. Marmur has treated thousands of scars non-surgically through electrical and laser treatments.

Sclerotherapy is the most common and effective treatment for spider veins. Spider veins are connected to larger vessels deeper in the skin and tend to form after childbirth or due to genetics. In the procedure, a very thin needle injects a sclerosing solution into the veins; this irritates the lining of the vessel, causing it to swell and stick together, and causing the blood to clot. Within a few weeks of the treatment, the vessel turns into scar tissue that eventually fades away. Dr. Marmur and her cardiovascular colleague have innovated a total leg makeover from the inside out. They will help treat the spider veins, but also discuss with you the underlying cause and whether you are a candidate for ultrasound or endovenous ablation. Minimizing the presence of spider veins is liberating and even energizes the legs.

Seborrheic keratosis removal

These crusty tan and brown plaques are genetic signs of aging, sometimes nicknamed barnacles or wisdom spots, that can be removed cosmetically with electrosurgery, with minimal recovery time. Rarely, they may regrow, but most often you might make new ones over time, which can also be removed.

ESKATA™ (hydrogen peroxide) topical solution, 40% (w/w) is the first FDA-approved topical treatment for raised seborrheic keratoses. Treatment includes a soft-tip, pen-like applicator that goes over each SK 4 times approximately 1 minute apart. Common side effects include itching, stinging, crusting, and redness. Multiple treatments might be needed depending on the SK.  Patients can see results as soon as 3 weeks after treatment.

Skin cancer removal

Factoring in the type of skin cancer, its location, and its stage, Dr. Marmur or Dr. Berliner and your referring dermatologist will decide on the best treatment option, choosing the simplest yet most effective course of action, and minimizing any scarring. Dr. Marmur or Dr. Berliner will excise the skin cancer, repair the area, remove the stitches at the appropriate time, see you in the post-operative time period, and send you back to your referring dermatologist for further skin care. The risk of skin cancers is increased in patients who smoke or who have chronic wounds including radiation dermatitis after other cancer treatments.

Skin cancer screening

We cannot stress enough the importance of your annual skin check. Our dermatologistis at Marmur Medical recommend an annual exam at every age starting in childhood. In this visit, your skin is thoroughly examined by your dermatologist — head to toe, back and front, from your scalp to the soles of your feet. Anything out of the ordinary is removed and tested, and all moles and skin conditions are noted for observation or treated as needed. Marmur Medical offers full-body photography for those who have many spots. Skin cancer screenings, also called total body examinations, are only part of the skin cancer check. We ask that you also see a dentist, an ophthalmologist, and, for women, a gynecologist once per year to have other areas checked.

Skin tag removal

Skin tags can be easily removed with a treatment such as snip excision or electrosurgery. This is a cosmetic procedure.

Skin texture/tone

The appearance of your skin’s texture and tone can be greatly improved with the right treatment plan. Taking into account your goals, the Marmur Medical team may suggest any one or more of the following options: microdermabrasion, laser therapy, soft tissue fillers or other injectables, and topical medications. The Marmur Medical team of experts can also provide advice on diet, exercise, skin care, and general health, all of which can contribute to a more radiant and youthful appearance. Finally, our team will recommend the best skin care regimen for your skin, understanding you may need to change your routine and products as the seasons change and your skin evolves.

Subcision is used to treat acne scars that have created an uneven skin surface. The fibrous tissue that binds the damaged skin to the underlying tissue is broken down, freeing up the outer layer of skin, and resulting in a smoother, more even appearance.

Tattoo removal

Just as it works on brown spots and other discolorations, laser therapy can tackle unwanted tattoos. The laser causes the pigments to break up and disappear; the efficacy depends somewhat on the color, the type of ink, and the age of the tattoo. Dr. Marmur has treated thousands of tattoos, including eyeliner and lip liner tattoos which require finesse to remove. If large tattoos leave a dusky outline after the majority of pigment is removed, Dr. Marmur may suggest Fraxel resurfacing to refine and eliminate the residue.

Botox, Dysport and Xeomin

Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin are each derived from botulinum toxin and are used to treat dynamic wrinkles, which occur as a result of facial muscle movement, such as frowning or squinting. Common examples of dynamic wrinkles are crow’s feet next to the eyes, and frown lines between the eyebrows, also called glabella lines. When you frown, scowl, concentrate, or squint, your muscles pull your skin into folds and lines. With age, the elasticity that brings the skin back to its original position decreases, and wrinkles form. These expressions are necessary, but with age they appear to be exaggerated and you may look more worried or upset than you actually are. Each of these injectables works by blocking the transmission of nerve impulses to the underlying facial muscle. Because the muscle cannot contract, the wrinkle relaxes, an effect that lasts for several months.

These toxins are highly purified and highly diluted and, in the case of botulinum toxin, millions of injections have been performed effectively and safely since its first use by Dr. Alan Scott in the 1980s for an eye condition, strabismus. Dr. Jean Carruthers, an ophthalmologist, noticed her patients’ wrinkles were reduced after the treatment of strabismus, and the medicine was approved by the FDA in 1989. Dr. Marmur has safely and successfully treated thousands of patients with botulinum toxin to achieve a natural, refreshed look, sometimes through what she calls “baby Botox” — her technique to use tiny amounts in strategic muscles to achieve the best effect.

Avoid all unnecessary blood thinners such as vitamins, supplements, fish oil, Vitamin E, or wine for 3-6 days.

Also avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, Aleve, and Advil.

Please stay on your medically necessary aspirin or blood thinners. We’d rather your skin have a tiny bruise than have a medical problem.

Read the consent and ask any questions you might have.

During treatment: Less is more. Frozen doesn’t look inviting or natural. We can always add more botox in 2 weeks if you feel you need more. We prefer not to ice so as not to change the normal temperature of the skin. You should be very gentle while touching your skin if applying make up or creams after.

Post Treatment:

You should be able to go about your normal routine right after you leave our office. But don’t go take a nap, or put your head in a pillow for 4 hours. You can exercise and go to work.  Minimal downtime or recovery is necessary.

Remember that you probably won’t notice results until 24 to 48 hours have elapsed. In clinical trials, a majority of people saw significant improvement at 7 days, continuing for up to a month.

Side effects associated with the injection include localized pain, inflammation, tenderness, swelling, redness, and/or bruising. Rarely, patients have a headache for 1-7 days, but sometimes this is easily treated with relaxation techniques.

Results for frown line treatments last up to three to four months. But new receptors are constantly growing so you will notice that 33% of muscle movement returns per month post treatment. It is normal to see the expression lines come back slowly.

Soft tissue fillers

Dr. Marmur is renowned for her skills and artistry using fillers on men and women. She is honored to have injected celebrities, editors in chief of almost all major beauty magazines, models–even those used for international campaigns, CEO’s, leaders in many fields, and is the go to injector for many of her dermatology colleagues. Her love of this procedure makes it exciting each time a patient wishes to experience the look of fillers.  Soft tissue fillers involve injecting a filling substance under the skin to “plump up” or contour and correct wrinkles, furrows, and hollows in the face and off-label in the chest, arms, knees, fingers, hands, toes, neck, buttocks, and other safe areas. At Marmur Medical, we are experts in administering a variety of fillers, and we choose the right one for your unique needs, ensuring that you get the best possible results. Dr. Marmur’s patients often say, “You are an artist! I can tell you love what you do!” It’s true, Dr. Marmur feels that each face is like an artistic project, a sculpture. She understands the entire picture of facial aging, how the internal architecture shrinks as the bones dissolve and thus the scaffolding holding up the cheekbones falls and narrows. The muscles atrophy and the fat shifts with gravity, and, the skin loses elasticity. She works with you to develop the right course of action, and provides you with input during each step of the way, ultimately collaborating with you on your look. You may come once or twice a year, or you may prefer to take baby steps until you find the perfect balance. Each master plan is completely individualized. All of the doctors at Marmur Medical are experts and highly trained and experienced. Our patients always know they are in good hands, receiving the best treatment possible.

Dr. Marmur is one of the first dermatologists in NYC to treat patients with Kybella, the first and only FDA-approved injectable that contours and improves the appearance of submental fullness. Now you can be rid of your double chin without having surgery! Treatment with Kybella is customized to the patient’s aesthetic goals for an improved chin profile. Many patients experience visible results in 2-4 treatment sessions spaced at least one month apart. Dr. Marmur is also a trainer for Kybella and teaches other physicians on applying proper technique.

Belotero is a new, finer, hyaluronic acid-based gel designed to add subtle, natural volume and plumpness to facial tissue. It was developed for the correction of moderate-to-severe facial wrinkles and folds, nasolabial folds (smile lines), and marionette lines (laugh lines), and its smoothness makes it effective in lip augmentation and in filling in lip lines and tear troughs — areas where the skin is more delicate. There is little recovery time, and patients treated with Belotero have said that they see immediate results in the reduction of wrinkles, but that the results are subtle and more natural compared with other fillers. It lasts six to twelve months.

Juvederm injectable gel is a smooth-consistency, synthetic gel made of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in your skin that helps to add volume and hydration. Your native hyaluronic acid may diminish with age, contributing to the formation of wrinkles and folds. Juvederm works to correct this by restoring hyaluronic acid in your skin, helping to smooth wrinkles and folds. It is used most effectively for those wrinkles and folds in the lower third of your face, like “laugh lines,” “smile lines” or “parentheses” (nasolabial folds), and “marionette lines” (oral commissures). In the Juvederm injection process, the gel is eased under the skin using a fine needle to augment, or fill, the soft tissue of the dermis — the dense inner layer of skin beneath the epidermis — to add volume and diminish wrinkles and folds. The procedure takes only about 15 minutes and results are immediate, with minimal recovery or downtime, and last six to twelve months. There are many types of Juvederm: Juvederm Ultra is a favorite for lips and Juvederm Ultra Plus is great for cheek bone areas. Juvederm Voluma is amazing for lifting cheekbones.  Juvederm Volbella is lovely for lips and fine lines. Dr. Marmur was one of the first to inject the new Juvederm Vollure for facial folds, and you can see her videos on instagram @marmurmedical and @dr_ellen_marmur when she injects a Vogue beauty writer and a dermatologist.

Radiesse is a synthetic dermal filler made of calcium hydroxylapatite. When injected into the deep dermis and subcutis, Radiesse provides a matrix into which the body’s own collagen can grow and add volume. It is used for soft tissue augmentation (to add volume to lips and cheeks) and can help to fill in deep skin folds and wrinkles. It is a favorite for non-surgical rhinoplasty (nose surgery) and for jawline definition, cheek augmentation, temple augmentation, and even in the hands. (In fact, Dr. Marmur published one of the first studies of the use of Radiesse for hand rejuvenation.) The effects of a Radiesse treatment can last six months to three years. Dr. Marmur has published on using Radiesse in the hands, and her research on using Radiesse in the temples and in the jawline proved they are safe and natural.

Restylane is a hyaluronic acid-based dermal filler that is used to treat fine lines on the upper and lower lip as well as deeper wrinkles and folds in the cheek areas (nasolabial, melolabial, and lines at the corners of the mouth). Restylane is also used to enhance lips, with results that have up to twice the longevity of standard collagen implant treatments. Restylane is injected into the skin to lift the lip, wrinkle, or fold. Depending on the area treated, most folds and wrinkles require one treatment, with minimal recovery time. Restylane is Dr. Marmur’s favorite filler for under the eyes where it lasts over a year and safely reduces tired-looking, dark circles. For most areas of the lips and face, Restylane lasts approximately six months to a year.

Restylane Lyft is an injectable cosmetic dermal filler used to soften wrinkles and facial lines. It is also a popular filler for cheek and temple augmentation, facial depressions, and facial scarring. It is made from hyaluronic acid gel; the hyaluronic acid augments the body’s natural supply, which tends to become depleted with age. The effects of a Restylane Lyft procedure can last for six to twelve months.

Restylane Refyne and Restylane Defyne are formulated hyaluronic acid dermal fillers made with XpresHAn TechnologyTM. They are designed to smooth fine lines along the corners of your mouth (nasolabial folds) and the lines that run toward the chin (marionette lines). Since they allow natural movement when you are smiling or frowning, Refyne and Defyne are the ultimate fillers for natural facial expressions.

Restylane Silk is a smooth gel formulation of hyaluronic acid that is injected into the lips to reverse the signs of aging. Restylane Silk is designed to provide precise lip shaping and line control, resulting in silkier, smoother lips and more natural-looking results that can last for up to 6 months. Dr. Marmur injected the model for Silk used for international marketing to show how beautiful it is for lips.

Sculptra is different from all other fillers. It is diluted into a thinner consistency and thus can be used to add volume to larger areas of the face as well as to standard areas such as wrinkles. Especially for patients with thin faces, or who have lost much of their cheek fat due to extreme fitness, genetics, medications, or other reasons, Sculptra can produce a more youthful, pleasing facial contour in a very elegant way. It can also be used in the back of hands for aging, in the upper chest for deep lines, in areas of depressions that may occur after liposuction, and for cosmetic correction of scars. In the procedure, tiny particles of poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) are diluted in a suspension of sterile water, carefully injected in the skin, and then molded for optimal results. The PLLA particles stimulate the formation of new collagen in the skin, adding volume over time. Sculptra may require a series of three to five treatments every four to six weeks, with improvement in contour occurring gradually over two to six months. For the optimal final effect, patients should massage all injected areas for five minutes, five times a day, for five days after the procedure.

Lasers represent a significant advance in dermatology and dermatologic surgery. Their precision, range of applications, and relatively short recovery time have brought new levels of treatment results. Short pulses of light remove skin tissue to improve the appearance of wrinkles, scars, blemishes, discoloration, blood vessels, and sun damage, as well as the skin’s overall tone and texture.

The expert team at Marmur Medical uses a variety of lasers, each delivering a specific wavelength of light to achieve different results for different conditions. Dr. Ellen Marmur has treated over 10,000 cases with laser surgery.

BLU-U Blue Light Photodynamic Therapy is a laser that treats moderate acne. It’s a great option for those uncomfortable taking antibiotics or who aren’t getting satisfactory results from topical treatments. The BLU-U is a unique blue light that kills the bacteria in skin that cause acne. The procedure is quick and pain-free, and is typically administered once or twice a week for five weeks.

Clear + Brilliant

Clear + Brilliant is a gentle laser treatment clinically proven to fight the effects aging has on skin, to give you smoother skin with a radiant, youthful glow. The results can include improvement in skin texture, radiance, and tone; glowing appearance of the skin; reduction in appearance of skin pores; an illuminated skin tone; and increased smoothness and softness of the skin.

Because Clear + Brilliant is a gentle treatment, there is minimal to no downtime, with little swelling — just some redness and a few days of a sandpaper-like texture that clears to leave behind smooth, revitalized skin.

Post-procedure information:

Expect pinkness, swelling (like a hive), bronzing, and cayenne pepper–colored pinpoint specks for up to a week on the face, two weeks on the neck and chest, and two to six weeks on arms and legs. Usually there is no pain afterward.

Post-procedure care:

1. Moisturize frequently with Aquaphor (for maximum hydration and healing) or a mild moisturizer of your choice such as SkinMedica TNS Ceramide Treatment Cream.

2. Avoid harsh soaps, brushes, exfoliants, or retinoids for at least one week.

3. Cleanse the skin with gentle products like Previse Purify once or twice daily.

4. Start using the SkinBetter Science Alto as soon as you can tolerate it, and follow until completed.

5. Occasionally, tiny acne-looking bumps may occur on the lower face and are best treated with benzoyl peroxide or cortisone cream.

Hello muscle tone!

Meet CoolTone, the newest addition to body contouring at Marmur Medical.
CoolTone is a noninvasive FDA-cleared body contouring treatment that uses Magnetic Muscle Stimulation (MMS) technology to strengthen, tone, and firm the muscles of the abdomen, buttocks, and thighs. Cooltone is quick, easy and pain-free! It uses external stimulation known as MMS technology that recruits muscle fibers and generates strong muscle contractions.

CoolTone vs. Competitive devices– CoolTone has 50% more magnetic intensity than the leading competitor(emsculpt). Measured in Tesla at the point of contact. CoolTone measures at 1.35T, competitor measures at .9T (I would include the illustration which is attached to this email on the one pager)

Who’s the ideal candidate? Patient CoolTone considerations from Allergan: healthy BMI, evidence of some muscle definition/tone, the degree of subcutaneous fat (patients with more subcutaneous fat should consider Coolsculpting first), and skin laxity.

What to expect during the procedure/how long will it take– CoolTone is a 30 minute procedure with no downtime. You may wear a thin layer of clothing over the treatment area. Paddle like applicators will be placed on the treatment area. Treatment will begin with provider increasing the level of intensity slowly until you have reached your maximum capacity.

What to expect after? CoolTone is non-invasive. Some may experience muscle soreness, as if you had an intense workout.

How many treatments will I need? During the consultation you and one of our providers will go over a recommended treatment plan. The majority of patients get 6-8 initial treatments. It is recommended to maintain results through monthly maintenance treatments. Ask us about our monthly membership options!

How much does it cost? During the consultation one of our providers will discuss our different package prices along with monthly memberships.

Fraxel DUAL

Fraxel treatment uses safe, fractional laser technology to help restore your skin to its original, beautiful glow. The results: improved tone and texture, erasing of unwanted brown spots, reduced fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes, minimized appearance of acne scars and surgical scars, and smoother, younger-looking skin.

Fractional laser technology does what its name implies: it pinpoints the laser to only a fraction of the skin. The pinpoints are closely spaced to ensure evenness of results, but because healthy skin is preserved around each point, there is little downtime and the skin typically heals quickly, though there is swelling and redness afterwards.

Marmur Medical offers Fraxel DUAL, which has two wavelengths: the deep-penetrating 1550 for rebuilding collagens and repairing damaged skin, and the 1927 for removing extra pigmentation and also helping with collagens and elastins.

INTRAcel is our micro-needling treatment that uses radiofrequency energy to promote collagen repair. Each treatment is designed to help tighten sagging skin and clear uneven skin tone due to acne scars, fine lines, large pores, and stretchmarks. By delivering radiofrequency heat energy to the middle layer of the skin, collagen and elastin production are stimulated without damage to the skin’s surface.

Intense pulsed light (IPL)

Nicknamed the “lunchtime laser,” intense pulsed light treatment is virtually painless, with little or no downtime — you can go right back to the office after your treatment! IPL improves the overall appearance of sun-damaged skin and removes age spots and freckles, most benign brown pigments, and redness caused by broken capillaries.

During treatment, IPL fragments unwanted pigment cells without damaging surrounding tissue. These shattered melanin particles are absorbed by the body over the following few weeks, so that little or no trace of them remains visible. Typically, the improvement is subtle and accomplished over a series of treatments so the patient’s skin does not appear obviously treated.

Laser Hair Removal

Laser Hair Removal selectively induces thermal damage to hair follicles to shrink and minimize hair growth. This non-surgical laser procedure uses linear scanning in short pulses, which is safe for the surrounding epidermis with minimal or no downtime.

PiQo4 is the hyperpigmentation treatment for all skin types. By using high-energy light beams, it can erase several skin issues including post inflammatory hyperpigmentation, melasma, sun damage, to tattoos. Its unique technology offers 4 wavelengths in order to treat the broadest range of pigment/tattoo colors, on the widest range of skin types. These four wavelengths – 1064nm, 532nm, 650nm and 585nm – target 9 of the most frequently used tattoo colors ranging from light orange to dark black.

Q-switched Nd:YAG laser

This laser emit the types of wavelengths of light that are absorbed by melanin, the pigment in brown- and black-colored lesions. It uses rapid bursts of high energy pulses for the removal of multicolored tattoos and deep pigments such as age spots, freckles, moles, and birthmarks.

Thermage is a non-invasive, radiofrequency cosmetic procedure that can smooth, contour, tighten and renew your skin’s collagen, through all the three skin layers: the epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous fat layer. Thermage Total Tip is the newest, strongest, most comfortable option in the 4th generation machine.

Dr. Marmur has recently added new techniques to customize your Thermage tightening and lift of your face, neck, and brow. She is a pioneer in combining Thermage with other lasers to give you a non-surgical “tummy tuck” or to refine a plastic surgery procedure, especially after pregnancy or dramatic weight loss.

Thermage basically works by two mechanisms: deep heating that works on tightening the deep collagen in the dermis and subcutaneous tissue, while also stimulating the formation of new collagen; and integrated cooling that keeps the surface of your skin safe during the procedure.

Thermage can treat sagging face skin and loose jowls and can redefine the jaw line and can address cosmetic eye issues such as under-eye bags, hooding, and rough texture on the eyelids. On the body, Thermage can treat wrinkled, sagging, or bulging skin and the appearance of cellulite on the abdomen, arms, hands, thighs, and buttocks.

Typically Thermage is single treatment procedure that lasts 45 to 90 minutes, depending on the treated area. There is almost no downtime, and the natural collagen rebuilding usually happens over two to six months — although visible results may be immediate. The results last around five years, depending on your underlying collagen rebuilding process, skin condition, and aging process.

By using Thermage in your personalized Master Plan in consultation with our team, you will benefit from stealth cosmetic surgery and Preservation AgingTM.

Total Leg Anti-Aging Makeover

Rejuvenate your legs from the outside in. Smoother, slimmer, more attractive legs — let Marmur Medical help you bring back the youthful appearance of your legs, with its multi-phase Total Leg Anti-Aging Makeover.

We start with an in-depth examination and consultation, and we then collaborate with the proper specialists and develop a custom treatment plan for your specific situation. We may even refer you to another expert for surgery, if necessary.

Varicose veins

We start with a Veinous Ultrasound Doppler, a non-invasive, state-of-the-art method that maps and assesses your leg veins. For large, deep varicose veins, minimally invasive endovenous laser ablation closes the unhealthy veins, which the body can then naturally break down and remove.

Spider veins

The newest, most gentle medications are injected into the veins, which gradually disappear, usually after one to five sessions.

When it comes to removing unwanted fat, Coolsculpting is an amazing new non-invasive treatment that uses fat-freezing technology to reduce inches of fat per treatment. It can be safely used on the buttocks, hips, thighs, knees, and even ankles. For larger areas, Coolsculpting works best with two or more sessions. We often find that a combination of the two —Coolsculpting for one larger area plus Vanquish to sculpt and refine other areas — is the best solution, and Marmur Medical is one of the only locations in New York City to offer both treatments together.

Skin tone and texture

Marmur Medical has a full line of laser, radiofrequency, and light treatments, as well as chemical peels, Thermage, and microdermabrasion. With all of these powerful treatment options on hand, we can make your legs look better than ever — no more brown spots, red spots, and wrinkles; a reduction in the appearance of cellulite; and tighter, smoother skin overall.

To help keep your legs looking their best, your Marmur Medical specialists will also give you custom recommendations on home treatments, exercise, cosmeceuticals, and sun protection.

The Marmur Medical Total Leg Anti-Aging Makeover can be performed for you at any age. Whether you want a post-pregnancy mommy makeover, have been training for a marathon, or have a big event coming up, the Marmur Medical Total Leg Anti-aging Makeover can help you look and feel your best.
